Course Options

Course Options

Subjects at Key Stage 4 are separated into two categories: Core and Optional.

Core subjects are compulsory and will be studied by all pupils. Pupils can also choose up to three optional subjects, based on their assessment results, the guidance they receive from their teachers, and their individual preferences.

Each student must take the core subjects of:

  • English literature
  • English language
  • Mathematics
  • Combined science (2 GCSEs) - All pupils will study for two GCSEs in Science.
  • Religious Education
  • Physical Education (subject not examined)

Pupils must also choose to study either:

  • History
  • Geography

Pupils can then choose two subjects from:

  • Art
  • Languages (pupils on pathway 1 must choose a language)
  • Drama
  • History
  • Geography
  • Citizenship
  • Music
  • Photography
  • Physical Education

Year 9 Options Process

The options process normally takes place between April and May in Year 9. Students are placed onto one of three pathways based on their academic achievement in Key Stage 3. Each pathway is designed to provide the best possible curriculum for your child’s needs and future aspirations.

Pathway 1 – Academic and EBACC Focus

This pathway is for our highest academic achievers and ensures your child is entered for the English Baccalaureate (EBACC).

What is the EBACC? The EBACC is a set of GCSE subjects that keeps future options open for study and careers. It includes:

  • English Language and Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences
  • History or Geography
  • A Modern Foreign Language (French)

Why is it important? Achieving the EBACC demonstrates a strong academic foundation valued by universities and employers. It prepares students for a wide range of opportunities in higher education and the workforce.

Core Subjects: All Pathway 1 students study English, Maths, Combined Science (worth 2 GCSEs), and core PE (non-exam).

Options: Students choose three subjects, one from each column. To qualify for EBACC, they must select French and either History or Geography.

Pathway 2 – Broad and Balanced

This pathway offers an academically rigorous curriculum with greater flexibility, allowing students to select subjects they enjoy and excel in.

Key Features:

  • Core subjects: English, Maths, Combined Science, and core PE
  • Three option subjects from a wide range, including Humanities, Arts, and Technology
  • Students must select either History or Geography (or both with approval)

This pathway encourages personal growth and skill development while maintaining high academic standards.

Pathway 3 – Supportive and Focused

Designed for students needing additional support in English and Maths, this pathway ensures they meet key expectations and build confidence.

Key Features:

  • Extra support in English and Maths
  • Core subjects: English, Maths, Combined Science, and core PE
  • Two option subjects plus a Pathway 3 intervention block
  • Humanities subjects are optional

This pathway provides tailored support to help students achieve their full potential.
